I believe that brokenness and beauty exist together. Part of being human is to personally know brokenness and pain – whether it is our own or that of others around us. Yet, amongst the pain there is beauty too. Acceptance, healing, and change can be powerfully seen in the midst of brokenness. This has been my own story, and I believe it can be the story of those who are willing to slow down and, with courage, acknowledge their own pain. This acknowledgement is a process of moving toward acceptance and understanding allowing new possibilities of change in our lives and in our relationships.
The therapeutic framework that informs my work with couples, families, and individuals is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is an attachment-orientated, experiential, modality that believes that every symptom we experience is understandable from an attachment point of view. Attachment refers to the quality of relationship we have (or had) with ourselves and others. When we understand what is going on ‘within’ ourselves, and ‘between’ ourselves and others, we are able to create new ways of relating that fosters healing – with loved ones and with oneself. I also appreciate Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory as it greatly informs our understanding of our autonomic nervous system (ANS). The autonomic nervous system is an integral part of how we experience our internal states, impacting our ability to self regulate, and assess danger (real or perceived). Tuning into, getting to know, and learning to supporting our nervous system is a integral component of my work enabling clients to reach their gaols for therapy.
I have a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT) at ACTS – Trinity Western University, and have been equipped to work with couples, families, and individuals from a systemic, experiential, and attachment-oriented perspective. I also hold a M.Div. from Regent College that allowed me to pursue my vocation in pastoral work. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the BCACC, and am in the final stages of acquiring the designation of Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT) with the Canadian Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
